Roller Garage Doors Explained
A roller door is a familiar sight on shop fronts and industrial units, but you may not be aware of the benefits of a residential garage door which has a roller opening mechanism.
What is a Roller Garage Door?
A garage door which opens with a roller mechanism is a sleek and simple solution, especially if you don’t have a lot of room directly inside or outside the garage itself. A roller garage opens from the bottom and slides directly upwards, rolling itself around at the top within a compact cylinder. As it opens in this way, the sections of the door have to be small in order to allow a tight roll to be made when it’s opened. This is why roller doors have thin horizontal panels rather than a smooth finish.
Roller garage doors have many benefits, one of the most obvious is that they take up very little room. Both the door and the mechanism are as compact as possible, and neither protrudes out of the garage opening itself. If you have limited space and need to park your car close to the door – either outside or inside the garage – then the door can still be operated as it opens vertically, rather than sticking out into your driveway or into the garage space.
Unlike other door types, this also means that you have maximum use of your garage space, particularly near to the ceiling. While other door styles have opening mechanisms which take up space at the top of your garage or down the side of the opening, the roller sits directly above the doorway (either within, just inside or – if you have very limited space – just outside the opening), allowing you to make the most of the space you have for storage. Roller doors come with an automatic opening as standard.

Our Range
We have a range of 10 different roller doors which come in a variety of sizes and finishes:
- 77mm roller doors are ‘standard type’ and 55mm roller doors are the compact version. If your garage door opening is on the small side, then the compact roller door may be the best option for you.
- Our roller doors come in either Painted or Laminated finishes. The available colours vary depending on the finish you choose. For more standard colours, choose Painted. If you’d like a woodgrain effect then Laminated is the way to go.
- No Box, Half Box and Full Box refers to the casing that covers the roll when your door is open. For standard garages where the door is mounted inside the entranceway, no box is required. Where the roll is located within or outside the garage opening, a half or full box is recommended.
