How to measure your garage door

When you order a garage door from us, you’ll need to know a few measurements so that we’re able to give you a quote which is as accurate as possible. Once we have conducted a free survey of your garage we’ll know more about exactly what size and type of door you require and we’ll make any final quote amendments there and then.

The more accurate your measurements, the less likely it is that we’ll have to change the amount you’re expecting to pay. Of course, you are under no obligation to buy if you are no longer happy with the quote.

Our doors are listed with just two measurements – the height and the width. These measurements are shown as number 1 and number 2 on the instructions below. If you find that your chosen door doesn’t come in the correct size, please speak to one of our advisors as adaptions can be made depending on the opening mechanism.

  • Measurement 1: Opening Width

The full opening width of the door is from one side to the other. Please measure from brick to brick. The measurement should be in millimetres or in feet & inches. It may help to measure at more than one point to ensure it’s correct.
  • Measurement 2: Opening Height

The full opening height of the door is from the floor to the underside of the lintel. Please measure the full opening height either in millimetres or in feet & inches.

These two measurements should ensure you find the right sized door in our product range. It would help us if you could also take the following three measurements:

  • Measurement 3 & 4: Interior Side Clearance
Whilst inside your garage, you’ll need to measure the space available at the edges. Please measure from the edge of the opening to the side wall.
  • Measurement 5: Roof Clearance
Whilst inside your garage, please measure from the underside of the lintel to the lowest part of the ceiling.

Roller Doors:

Roller doors require some slightly different measurements, as you must allow for the door roll when it’s open. Our standard 77mm roller doors will need a minimum of 300-350mm headroom in order to fit. The 55mm compact roller doors require 205mm of headroom. If you have this space between the ceiling of your garage and the lintel of the opening, then ordering a standard 77mm door with No Box should suffice.

If the headroom needed encroaches into the opening of your garage, first make sure that there is still enough height for your vehicle to fit. In this situation, a Half Box or Full Box may be required, depending on where best to mount the door roll. We can confirm this at your free survey.
