A new garage door is a significant investment so it’s important to look after yours properly. The right care can ensure your door lasts for years and years, giving you great value for money and keeping your belongings safe and secure. Please note: These suggestions are for guidance only.
General Care
Your new garage door has been built to last and should need minimal maintenance, but it’s important to ensure a few things are done regularly to extend the life of the door and to keep it working properly:
- Minor scratches are not covered under our guarantees and should be repaired as soon as possible. Please contact us for more information on how to do this for your specific door.
- Grit salt, bird droppings and general grime should be cleaned off the surface of the door and the internal mechanism as soon as possible. These substances can all corrode the material over time.
- If you live within 2 miles of the coast, washing down your door with car shampoo and clean water every month should slow the corrosive action of the salt and moisture in the air. Timber doors should only be cleaned with warm water and a soft sponge.
- Inland garage doors should be cleaned with a little car shampoo and clean water every couple of months or so. Timber doors should only be cleaned with warm water and a soft sponge.
- Check the inner mechanism regularly for grime build up, obstructions and debris. Brush down with a soft-bristle brush to remove dirt.
- When opening your door, you should always lift from the centre – never pull the door open from the side as this will unbalance the opening mechanism.
- Never open your garage door with the key still in the lock, as this could result in the key being broken off, depending on the configuration of your garage.
Timber Doors
Our timber doors are all supplied with a pre-applied wood stain. This means that your new door is covered under our guarantees and will be resistant to environmental factors from day one. Your door will need to be re-stained at regular intervals throughout its lifetime – the frequency of this will depend on the weather and environmental conditions around your property.
- A reduced shine on the door and the colour becoming lighter are both indications that the timber needs to be re-stained. Please use a wood stain rather than a wood varnish, as it will allow the timber to breathe. Varnish may trap moisture in and cause rot.
- Ensure you stain the entire door, including the very edges.
- Dark wood stains are not advised for south-facing garage doors or for ones which get a lot of sunlight. Darker colours will absorb more sunlight and this could degrade the material quicker than it usually would.
